William Caxton - A Portrait In A Background

William Caxton – A Portrait in a Background (1976) by Edmund Childs (Northwood) – Crappy Old Books

Step into the ink-stained world of England’s first printer with William Caxton – A Portrait in a Background (1976), a quietly intriguing study by Edmund Childs (Northwood). More contemplative essay than conventional biography, this slim volume peers at Caxton’s life through a misty lens of scholarship, speculation, and slightly worn-out footnotes. Childs offers a reflective (if sometimes meandering) take on the man behind the movable type, set against the shifting cultural backdrop of 15th-century England.

Published in 1976 and showing its age in all the right ways, this book is a must-have for completists, Caxton cranks, or anyone who enjoys the comforting smell of yellowed pages and academic certainty delivered with a sigh. Available now from Crappy Old Books – where history hangs on by a threadbare spine.

Excellent condition.
